Oscars 2018

My friend Amy hosted the Oscar party this year. I hosted last year and it was so fun but this year Amy wanted to host and I’m so glad she did.  It was a great night!  Amy did a pajama theme and it was perfect because Saturday night a lot of us went to the annual Mardi Gras gala to benefit the Boys and Girls Club so we were tired Sunday.

To make it easy for Amy we each brought a snack.  I brought Feta Dip.  It was so easy!   I’ll post the recipe for my Saturday Snack this week.

Amy also had a few signature cocktails to go along with the Oscar theme.  They were so fun!  The Oscar-tini was champagne and cranberry juice the Missouri Mule was a re-named Moscow Mule and  a nod to Three Billboards.   She also had printed ballots and we each put in $5 and voted on our favorites. I won the Oscar Ballot contest!   We got SO excited when our nominees won.

This year I watched 8 out of the 9 Best Picture movies.  I was so thrilled that The Shape of Water won best picture.  I thought that was the best movie of the bunch.  Graig, Brock and I watched it on Christmas day in Arizona.  It was an artsy film and it was full of action and it was also a love story. It was so good!!

Graig and I also loved Three Billboards and I'm glad that film got a lot of love at the Oscars last night.  I also loved Get Out, The Post, Dunkirk and Darkest Hour.  I did not like Phantom Thread or Lady Bird.

I always love Oscar night and I had so much fun at the party.

Birthday Cooking Class

For my birthday I wanted to do a cooking class with some friends.  My friends Rachael and Heather did all the planning and it turned it so fun!  We had a signature cocktail, a few appetizers and then we made a salad and a pasta dish for the main course and Heather did an ice cream sundae bar for dessert.

It was a great night!  I picked the main entree which was Ina Garten’s rigatoni with sausage and fennel.

We had the party/class at Heather’s House.  She is an amazing cook and has the best house for parties.

Every party needs a signature drink so Rachael made a signature cocktail for me.  It was a Rasberry Cosmo.  She made it with fresh raspberry purée, vodka and raspberry liquor.

Heather made homemade bread which was so amazing!

It was honestly so fun to get together and cook with my friends.  I really love doing that.  Everyone pitched in and helped with the cooking.  We made a citrus and beet salad and the rigatoni together.

And of course we took lots and lots of pictures.

For dessert Heather had a sundae bar including homemade lemon sorbet.   She gave me the recipe for the sorbet and I am going to make it soon.  It was so delicious!

Here is the pasta recipe we made

Rigatoni with sausage and fennel

3 tablespoons good olive oil
3 cups chopped fennel (1 large bulb)
1 1/2 cups chopped yellow onion
1 1/4 pounds sweet Italian sausages, casings removed
2 teaspoons minced garlic (2 cloves)
1/2 teaspoon whole fennel seeds, crushed with a mortar and pestle
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 cup dry white wine
1 cup heavy cream
2/3 cup half-and-half
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 pound rigatoni
1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley leaves
1 cup freshly grated Italian Parmesan cheese, divided

Heat the olive oil in a large heavy pot or Dutch oven, such as Le Creuset, over medium heat. Add the fennel and onion and saute for 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until tender. Add the sausage and cook for 7 to 8 minutes, crumbling it with a fork, until nicely browned. Add the garlic, crushed fennel seeds, red pepper flakes, 2 teaspoons salt, and 1 teaspoon black pepper and cook for one minute. Pour in the wine, bring to a boil, and add the heavy cream, half-and-half, and tomato paste. Bring back to a boil, lower the heat, and simmer for 20 minutes, until the sauce has thickened.

Meanwhile, bring a large pot of water to a boil, add 2 tablespoons salt, and cook the rigatoni according to the directions on the package. Drain and add to the sauce, stirring to coat the pasta. Cook over low heat for 5 minutes to allow the pasta to absorb the sauce. Off the heat, stir in the parsley and 1/2 cup of the Parmesan. Serve hot in shallow bowls with the remaining 1/2 cup Parmesan on the side.

The party  was perfect.  Heather was a great teacher and it was so fun to cook together. This cooking party was a fabulous way to celebrate turning 42!

Ava's going away party

In less than a week our Ava leaves for Czech Republic for a year to study abroad through the Rotary exchange program.   She is SO excited to go and I'm thrilled for her.  I know she is going to have an amazing experience.  She wanted a big going away party to say goodbye to all of her friends.

We had her party on Sunday.  Our friends own a campground so we had the party there and it was perfect!
Ava loves cake from the College where we work so they made her a cake for her party.  It was delicious!

We made fun photoprops that people could use in their pictures. Our colors for the party were red and blue from the colors in the Czech flag.

I had notecard so people could write notes to Ava that she could open infe she got to Czech if she gets homesick.

She has had many amazing experiences this year as she prepared for her exchange so I printed pictures from her year year from the Rotary Yourh Exchange.

We also made a signature drink for the kids.  It was a red, white and blue punch.

Ava created a Snapchat filter for her party.   Grandma Jan and I tested it out.

Our friend Shawn grilled chickens for us for the party.  They were delicious.  We also had tons of side dishes.  Some my fiends made and I had some catered so we had plenty of food.

Ava and some seeet girls from her class.  She has been to school with some of these girls since pre-school.   She is really going to miss them next year.

Ava's basketball coach came to the party. We love him!  His name is Mac and he has coached Ava for 5 years.   He is the best coach and he gave her drills to work on so she keeps up her skills when she's away next year.

We took a big picture of all of the kids that came to the party.   Ava wanted lots of people there so I'm glad so many people were able to come.

It was the perfect send-off for Ava!   This week we have been packing her up and getting her ready to go.  I am so proud of her and I know she is going to have a great year!

Happy birthday Brock!!

Today Brock turns 20!!!   I am so proud of the young man he is.  Last August he moved to Arizona to find his way in this big world.  After a year of college he wasn't sure what he wanted to do so he moved to Arizona to figure it out.  I'm proud that he is figuring things out.  He got a good job at State Farm insurance working in the customer care center and he's going to Arizona State in the fall. He absolutely loves Arizona!

Right now he's  home for a week and we are enjoying every second with him.

Today we are headed to the Saratoga race track with him for a day of fun!  We are going to keep the celebration going tonight with a cookout and ice cream cake.

Happy birthday Brock!!!

Cheers to 19 years!

Today is our 19th wedding anniversary!  We are going to celebrate by going out to dinner on Friday night. Tonight we are going to relax and have dinner at home with Brock and Ava.

Here we are on our wedding day.  I can't believe that was 19 years ago. We look like babies!

I am proud of the life that we have built together and the two children that we have been blessed with Graig is the most patient and loyal man I know and I am thankful for him every day!

Here's to many more years together!
